You've Never Felt Love Like This Before

Yesterday, I got the most AMAZING revelation and I just had to take a moment to share it with you! I was in the middle of teaching a message on receiving God's love (you can listen to it below). We know that God's love is limitless and unconditional towards us. And as I was teaching the message at our weeklyGo Hard for Christ youth service, this revelation hit me like a truck! This is what happened in the few minutes leading up to it. I asked our teenagers a simple question:

How do you feel loved by other people close to you?

I got all kinds of different answers. I feel loved...
"When people are honest."
"When people say nice things to me."
"When they encourage me!"
"When they are loyal to me."
"When they are looking out for me."
"By the way they take care of me!"
"When they give me things."
"When they go out of their way to do certain things for me."

The list went on and on... then the revelation hit!

If that's how you feel most loved by other people, how do you expect to feel loved by God if you don't allow him to do those same things to you and for you?

God is capable of doing each one of those things listed. God is love, and every scenario that we can come up with on how we feel loved will lead back to something that God did first and does best! God is love and He wants to love us unconditionally! But it's our job to put ourselves in the proper place so that we can receive God's love, and not reject His love. So ask yourself, how do I feel most loved by people? Then take inventory and see if you have allowed God to love you in that same way.

Several years ago my wife introduced me to something that changed my life forever. It changed how I viewed my relationship with my wife and with others. It also helped me to discover more about myself. It is called the five love languages - based on a popular book The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman. It's a great way to find out how you most feel loved by others. I found out that the way I most feel loved by my wife is words of affirmation and acts of service from her towards me. Amazingly, when I applied those things to my relationship with God, I found out that the same holds true. I feel so loved by God when he affirms me by speaking to me, and even receiving prophetic words from others. When God says those things to me I write them down and I go back to read them often. Then when God does things for me to make things easier or better in my life, that's just the icing on the cake. When He sends people to me to help serve the mission that he's given me, it expresses His love towards me. Even thinking about Jesus dying on the cross for me speaks love to me because it was the ultimate act of service and sacrifice.

Take the test and find out what your most dominant love languages are!

If receiving a gift from someone makes you feel most loved, then how will you ever feel loved by God if you never choose to receive his blessings in your life? You MUST receive those gifts/blessings from God. Or if you are a person that translates love as spending quality time together, then it is of utmost importance for you to spend TIME with God, in His presence. If you don't, you might find yourself not feeling loved by God -- not because God has stopped loving you, but because you have not put yourself in proper position to receive His love. If loyalty and faithfulness are important, then it is important that you trust God especially in the hardest seasons of your life. It is then that God can show His faithfulness towards you and the resulting feeling will be love!

I believe this principle holds the key to TRULY receiving God's love. And as it says in 1 John 4:10, "In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us..." Receiving God's love is how you put yourself into a position to live the blessed life that He's promised.

How to Get Direction from God About the Stuff That Matters Most

As a pastor and someone who is very visible in a large ministry, there are a few questions that I get more often than others. “Are you Bill Winston’s son?” – Yes, since birth. “How old are you??” – I was born in 1985 so you can do the math. But the last one is the most important question and a question that everyone seems to have at some point:

“What do I do now?? I need some direction.”

In life it is certain that at some point we're all going to need direction. What I have found is that sometimes the direction that we think we should take is not always the direction that God wants us to take.
Ephesians 2:10 the Amplified Bible says, "For we are God’s [own] handiwork (His workmanship), recreated in Christ Jesus, [born anew] that we may do those good works which God predestined (planned beforehand) for us [taking paths which He prepared ahead of time], that we should walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us to live]."

So there's a path that God has planned for us to take. A place of success reserved just for you. The only catch is that God is the only one who has the map, so if we want to get there, we have to for directions.

The 12 Disciples Were Teenagers!...So What's Your Excuse?

Did you know that the first apostles/disciples in the Bible were TEENAGERS?? They were named apostles by Jesus himself (Luke 6:13-16). The Bible goes on to refer to them as the twelve apostles in some cases, and in other instances they are called what we know them as - the twelve disciples.

In the historical Jewish culture, it is recorded that many youth were graduating from formal schooling by the age of 15. At that point they would go on to become apprentices for different trades (i.e. blacksmith, fisherman, farmer). This is good to remember because Peter, James, and John were all fishermen when Jesus called them to follow Him (Luke 5:1-11).

Another point which we cannot overlook is the fact that Jesus was 30 years of age when he started his ministry assignment on the earth. As it was Jewish custom, Rabbis usually took on "disciples" or followers to train at the exact age of 30. Jesus then calls these disciples "little ones" multiple times in the scripture (Luke 10:21, Luke 17:2...)

Now in Matthew 17, something significant happens. It was time to pay temple taxes, and since the disciples had been traveling with Jesus, they had no way of paying. Jesus then tells Peter to go grab a fish and look in it's mouth and you will find a gold coin - take it and pay taxes for both he and Peter. (The Greek word used in verse 27 was stater, which was the exact amount to pay temple tax for two.) But why only those 2? According to Exodus 30:14-15, only those who were over the age of 20 had to pay temple tax. So that is conclusive evidence that Peter was possibly the only disciple over the age of 20. In Matthew 8:14-15 the scripture references Jesus coming to Peter's house to heal his mother-in-law, which means that he must have been married. (Peter was the only one of the disciples that we know was married during the time when Jesus was alive.)

Matthew was known to be a tax collector (Luke 5:27) which is usually reserved for those who might have been adults. However, there is no conclusive evidence on this so we can only speculate.

So what does all this mean? The disciples were following Jesus at the age of most high school students. At the time that we are usually sending students off to college, the disciples were launching the first church and adding thousands daily to the faith. So if they can be used at such a young age, with no formal theological teaching or credentials, why can't you be used in the same way? What's your excuse? What's holding you back from God using you in a mighty way?

Never let circumstances of this world keep you from the best of God. He's not looking for your ability, He's looking for your availability. All you have to do is say yes to God, just like the disciples.

Free From the Trap

When the Bible uses the word offended it is translated from the original Greek word ‘skandalizo’. It literally translates “to fall into a trap.” This is where we get our current English word scandalous. When I think about the state of our county and culture,  it seems like everyone is offended at something. But if offended can be translated as falling into a trap, then we have to ask the question, who is behind setting up all of these traps?…Because that’s all they are. TRAPS. How many of us have unknowingly gotten caught up in a trap, whether personal or political, and then asked ourselves how did we get into this mess? Things have gotten messy for sure. But when you choose to walk in love, you are choosing freedom over entrapment. Love repels offense, and is the pathway to your freedom.

Don’t be a victim to the Enemy’s traps in media, culture, politics, religion, news, and anything else you can think of. Walk in love, like Jesus did. That's the only way you can live above all of the foolishness in this world today. That's how you can be free from the trap. #FreefromtheTrap

5 Steps To Ending Worry in Your Life

During the last few weeks I have been teaching as series called "Care•less" - not meaning not careful, but living free of worry and anxiety. In the world today it seems like it's impossible to avoid worrying about something. Life brings so many twists and turns. Some are expected and some are a complete surprise. But know this, God was not surprised by what you are going through. As a matter of fact, He saw it coming. Now you might be wondering, God why are you letting me go through this?? However, there is one thing that we should consider before we point the finger at God: He has already prepared our rescue package. That's why God is good, because He didn't leave us alone or forget about our needs. He saw what we needed ahead of time and made reservations for us. All we have to do is receive His strategy, wisdom, direction, and provision that will prove to be the answer to whatever life is throwing our way.

God says in a passage found in 1 Peter 5:5-10 that you can cast all of your cares (worries, anxieties) on Him because he cares for you. BUT there is a specific strategy that this passage outlines, giving us steps to follow so we can live worry free. Here we go!
